Career Guidance

Dream For Life Africa is passionate about creating career awareness and running youth programmes that help empower them to make informed decisions regarding their education, technical training or choosing a career path.

We take interests, aptitudes and abilities, as well as available resources and opportunities into consideration before embarking on the guidance journey of identifying a career path to pursue.

The purpose of career guidance is to provide you with the essential tools for improved reflection, knowledge and autonomy in decision making.

HIGHLIGHTS OF SOME PAST ACTIVITIES

2018 Career Jamboree:

As part of its career guidance interventions, working in partnership with Childline SA, in March 2018 DLA held a Career Jamboree at PHL Moroka High School in Hammanskraal. At the jamboree, a group of Dream for Life Africa professionals addressed a group of 300 Grade 11 school girls from around the neighborhood. They inspired, motivated, and empowered the learners with information about their respective careers such as engineering, accounting, and journalism. Useful materials such as prospectuses from various universities and booklets about funding opportunities supplied by companies like Sasol where also distributed to the learners.

Etwatwa Career Expo:

As part of Youth Month commemorations last year, DLA hosted a Career Expo in Etwatwa in the East Rand of Gauteng. The aim of the Expo was to provide Grade 12 learners with information about enrolment at tertiary level as well as to create awareness about the funding opportunities. Learners from five schools in the area attended, and the event was well supported by leading institutions such as Wits University and Sci-Bono. Please refer to the website for more details.

WHY CAREER GUIDANCE?

The main goal of career guidance is to contribute to your holistic development by fostering career awareness and providing adequate support as you move towards the workforce. It’s important for your decision making to be centered around continuous development throughout your life.

For this reason, we don’t restrict our career guidance programme to the formal education system or try to slot you into an occupation, as has traditionally occurred.

We’re interested in helping the youth with identifying a career and better defining their dreams, interests by outlining the importance of positive positioning through staying in school and being active participants that initiate change in their communities.

Why Our Career Guidance Programme Is Important?

Why we created the career guidance programme:

  • To alleviate fears and conflicts about finishing secondary school and choosing a career path;
  • To assist youths that dropped out of the formal educational system get career change advice and use alternative options that can propel them;
  • To compensate for the scarce and poorly publicised information regarding educational and job opportunities;
  • To create awareness about occupations that exist, their most important characteristics, the education, training and skills required, and paygrades;
  • To hone their job search skills by teaching them where to job hunt and how to position and present their skills.
HOW WE DO CAREER GUIDANCE

Why we created the career guidance programme:Our organization provides career guidance to learners in schools located in underdeveloped communities, with the following principal aims:

  • Step 1

    Advice a Learner

  • Step 2

    Inform Learner

  • Step 3

    Inspire, Encourage & Motivate

Expose learners to the diverse range of professions that are available;

  • Advise learners on all the options available to them after high school, both academic and entrepreneurial, and guide them on how to go about pursuing these options;
  • Inform learners about the process of enrolling to tertiary institutions and entrepreneur-based institutions;
  • Inform learners about funding opportunities for post-high school studies. We advise on how to find scholarships, bursaries and loans;
  • Provide tutorials on the Dream for Life Africa platform, or through partnerships with competent organizations or individuals;
  • Inspire, encourage and motivate learners to reach for the starts and touch their best selves.
